Fashion design is not normally my cup of tea, but when your girlfriend is a textiles student you make it your cup of tea. Okay that might be a slight exaggeration but when I was asked if I wanted to go the “Hello, My Name is Paul Smith Exhibition” I was a bit lost for words, I think my reaction was “eh?”
Anyway, last week we headed off to the Paul Smith exhibition and I had little to no knowledge of who he was before hand. I knew the basics though and I thought that was good enough. I wont get into too much detail about it all because I don’t think I could convey this experience well enough, especially with my lack of knowledge; but I will say I did really enjoy it. Being into design myself I found it really interesting to learn about all these crossovers from fashion into product design, all these little things I never really thought of before and how everything is so similar.
The exhibition includes a replica of Paul Smiths office, which is apparently just as cluttered in real life. A replica of his design studio right next too a gigantic wall filled with every colour of button imaginable and a few other parts. My personal favourite section of the exhibition was his print collection. Countless incredible works covering three or four walls, which is only a small section of his collection. That I found truly inspiring, I feel as though every time you looked at the walls something else would catch your eye.
Overall it is a very small Exhibition but it definitely is packed to the rafters. I would have loved to see a bit more. I feel like it was lacking something and I can’t quite put my finger on exactly what it was missing. If the Exhibition comes to a city near you I would definitely recommend it even if you are not into fashion design. I really did enjoy it and I hope you liked my photos from there!
